Exklusive Ferienwohnung in Oppenheim

Our historic old cooperage is situated just to the south of the oldest part of Oppenheim. The house was built around 1717 and served first of all as the Lutheran Rectory to the church of St Sebastian which had just been rebuilt following its destruction in 1689 during the Nine Years' War.  The church, unneeded, was eventually demolished in 1837, but the villa continued to house the local school. In our garden you can still see the remains of walls 1250 years old dating back to the the first church of St Sebastian which was built before AD 774 and was destroyed in 1118 by the Archbishop of Mainz, Adalbart I. 

 

At the beginning of the last century, the house was acquired by a cooper who set up his business in the outbuildings of the courtyard and the cellars below. The business continued to flourish, providing local vintners with the barrels necessary for their trade, until well into the 1970s after which the building was used solely as a dwelling. 

 

We bought the property, which is a listed building both inside and out, in early 2009. After extensive planning and several cycles of approvals, the renovations were completed at the close of 2010. When renovating the building we paid particular attention to restoring and retaining the detail, respecting the soul of this fine, old house. Heating and lighting are completely modern. The tall, high old windows have been replaced, in their original style of wood, with new - double glazed and energy-efficient. 

 

Our guest appartment (65m²) has been up and running since mid-2011. It comprises a bedroom, a living room, a fully-equipped kitchen, an hallway and a bathroom with toilet. The appartment is conceived for 1-2 guests, though due to popular demand we can accommodate a further 1-2 guests on a very comfy day bed in the living room. We have furnished the appartment with attention to detail: the bedroom suite is Art Nouveau, built locally in Darmstadt. The living room contains a baroque rural wardrobe and an Art Deco vitrine. Much of the original flooring could not be saved and we have replaced it with boards of oiled ash wood. The bathroom is beautifully rendered in slate. All rooms are around 4.20 meters high. 

 

The appartment has its own separate entrance. Oppenheim's famous market square with its cafés, restaurants and wine bars is a short 5 minute walk from the appartment; supermarkets, pharmacies, doctors and the post office are within a 7-10 minute walk .
